Back in the summer of 1985, the world was introduced to a special group of misfit kids. They lived in a nondescript coastal community called "The Goondocks."

Fittingly enough, they were called "The Goonies."

We watched on the edge of our seats as they went on a wild search for pirate One Eye Willie's "rich stuff"-- the Goonie code for his long-lost treasure.

This hit film surprisingly did not spawn a sequel. Besides a fun Nintendo game series, there weren't many product tie-ins with this movie, either.

Sixteen years later, however, fans of "The Goonies" are getting a treasure for themselves.

On Aug. 21st, Warner Bros is re-releasing "The Goonies" as a special edition, digitally remastered DVD. The disc will feature scenes that were previously cut from the movie, cast interviews, and the video for the movie's memorable theme, "Goonies R Good Enough"--- performed by none other than Cyndi Lauper.

Goonies fan Erik Candiani is also keeping the legend of "The Goonies" alive. His website, The GoonieS Homepage, has received more than 200,000 hits, and it was recently cited in an Associated Press article about Goonies nostalgia. Erik's site features a "Where Are They Now" section on the cast members, movie trivia, as well as background information on the scenes that were left on the cutting room floor.

Erik even provides fans with a peek at his own fantasy for a Goonies sequel. His script is also posted on the site.

Imissthe80s.com recently asked Erik a few questions. Here is what he had to say:

1) What inspired you to create a web site about "The Goonies"?
Erik: In 1994, I was just learning a bit about web design. I wanted to start a site that focused on one of my favorite films, but didn’t want to do one that already had a billion places on the net - like "Star Wars." I chose "The Goonies" because of the memories that I had growing up, and how it reminded me of my friends from adolescence.

There was only ONE other site dedicated to the film at the time – that soon went away. It was called “The Kayoss Goondocks." It was fairly minimal, so I took it upon myself to research EVERYTHING about the film. I wanted to gather everything that was still out there to preserve it. Since 1994, several other websites have popped up – some just copying the same info . . . others adding a personal touch. The original address was www.spiritone.com/~candiani (Now a dead link). I purchased the “TheGoonies” domain in 1997.

2) Has anyone ever tried to buy your domain name from you?
Erik: Yes. Nobody with any real money. However, if Warner Brothers wanted it for a good reason, I would not try to rip them off. I would just request the amount of money that I have used to support it through the years . . . and some form of credit. I would be honored if they asked.

3) You seem to be a talented screenwriter. By posting your work online, are you afraid of seeing your ideas show up somewhere else without your getting proper credit?
Erik :
Thank you. I am a published writer, and have written several scripts. As far as the online version, I am not concerned because it is public knowledge that I have written it. I actually wrote this script 4 years ago – and Dreamworks requested a story synopsis and outline of the story.

I was really trying to push it through at the time, but Dreamworks wasn’t sure if the idea of a Goonies sequel was viable. I actually feel a little responsibility for the current interest . . .

I wrote them several letters, and my agent contacted them several times regarding the idea. As far as worrying that someone will take the idea – it really isn’t that easy to steal someone else’s work. A large studio would rarely put themselves in that position – it is cheaper for them just to buy it up front rather than pay for it later with both bad press and money. I will be posting more pages soon!

5) Have you ever met any of the original cast members?
Erik:
No, just the production staff. I have spoken with Sloth’s stunt double, one of the policemen at the end, and one of the producers. I was set to meet Corey Feldman, but the interview fell through at the last moment. Both producers (?) of the DVD contacted me for support on the upcoming DVD.

6)Did you like the Goonies II video game?
Erik:The video game was a letdown for me. I think the film idea had so much potential for gaming… and the technology of the time couldn’t provide the support. Just imagine what they could do today . . . "Goonies: PlayStation 2" . . . "Goonies Quake!"

7) When, and if, "The Goonies" sequel goes into the pre-production phase, would you like to be a part of the process? If so, what role would you most like to play: writer, casting agent, or director?
Erik:
I would like to be the writer. I have concocted an adventure to blow away adventures . . . and hope that if they decide to go another route that they do justice to the story (What I currently have online barely scratches the surface).

My thought is this: who better to write a sequel than someone who actually cares about the story? I would love to be a part of it, and hope that they decide to include me in SOME capacity. I have tried my best to keep the dream alive! :-)
