Adam and the Ants took the British music
scene by storm in the early 80's with the release of their album
"Kings of the Wild Frontier". The album spawned three
top ten hits including the songs "Ant Music" and "Dog
Eat Dog" It didn't take long for Adam and the Ant's to
find success in the states. By 1983 Adam and the Ants were enjoying
heavy radio and MTV rotation with the songs "Strip"
and "Goody Two Shoes"
What made Adam Ant so unique is the style of make-up and his
outrageous clothes. his make-up wasn't quite Kiss and it definitely
was not like Boy George's. Adam's style was glam punk with a
pirate motif thrown in.
Adam recorded solo in 1985 with the
release of the album "Viva Le Rock." The album was
not as successful as his previous releases, but he saw some
video and radio airplay with the albums title song and the song
"Apollo 9". Adam also shed his pirate clothes and
his make-up was not as drastic.
Adam experimented with acting in the 80's and filmed guest appearances
on "The Equalizer" and "Amazing Stories"
among others. Adam also began acting in films.
In 1990, Adam released "Room at
the Top". This was the emergence of the suave debonair
Adam. The pirate clothes were replaced by tailored suits and
a clean cut make-up less image. Adam was more pop, and less
punk and many of his old fans were not feeling the new Adam.
On the same token, Adam gained many new fans who had not been
familiar with his previous work. In 1995, Adam released "Wonderful".
A contemporary pop album, it was a far cry from his earlier
work. Many critics felt that "Wonderful" was Adam's
best work.
In 2000, Adam & the Ants released
"Ant Box", a 3 disc compilation of nearly 3 decades
of music. It has been a long time since fans have heard any
new material from Adam. As the world waits for new "Ant
Music", music groups such as Nine Inch Nails and Sugar
Ray have covered Adam and the Ant classics.
