Jem DVD Review

The Jem Season 1 & 2 DVD is something that every Jem and the Holograms fan will be proud to own. The DVD was released on March 30, 2004-much to the pleasure oof Jem fans who have been waiting years and years for Jem to be released on DVD.

The packaging is exquisite. The cover art is a black background with a picture of Jem. Just by looking at the front cover, you have no idea just how precious this 4-disc collection is. The box opens. The inside reveals Jem's signature pink and yellow colors. Each disc is encased in it's own individual shell. Behind the clear plastic shell is a picture of each of the holograms-Jem, Shana, Kimber and Aja. The right opening sleeve includes a pouch that holds a booklet. The booklet includes descriptions of each of the episodes included-and information about the related extras. The back cover of the inside of the packaging that holds the discs features a picture of The Misfits. Also included is a picture of Jem and Rio kissing.

The DVD release is hopefully one of many releases of this classic cartoon on DVD. The DVD was released by Rhino who has brought many classic cartoons to DVD, including The Transformers. If the Jem releases are patterned after The Transformer releases, the DVD's may be released once a year. Rhino has not made any official statement as to when future Jem episodes will be released.

Jem ran for three seasons in the mid-eighties. The show centered around the female rock group Jem & The Holograms, their friends, foster kids, and rivals. Hey-if you are vibin with the 80's you know about Jem so I don't have to get into all of the wicked details. This was no cartoon just for kids. Jerrica was borderline schizophrenic, jealous of her own alter ego. Even their foster kids had mad drama, Banee almost went blind, Deidre, Chrissy and Banee ran away, and Laura got hooked on drugs.

This is all in good fun. I am the biggest Jem fan ever, every morning for breakfast me and my kids watch Jem. I'm lucky enough to have all 65 episodes on video tape and I am anxiously awaiting for the show to be released on DVD. Be sure to take our Ultimate Jem Quiz too.
Top 5 Most Dysfunctional Jem Episodes

1. (All time most dysfunctional) Midsummer Nights Madness

This episode #59, has Jem and the Holograms over in Greece. Jerrica and Rio get into an argument over, you guessed it Jem. Once again Jerrica is jealous over her alter ego Jem. After talking to Synergy, Jerrica decides to see if she can get Rio's attention again, she develops another pseudo personality, a dark haired beauty named Jamie. In this episode Riot chases Jem, Minx chases Rio, and Jerrica, Jem and Jamie battle for Rio. Complete madness.
2. Out of the Past
This is a pretty depressing episode considering this was supposed to be a children's show. Jem & the Holograms come across Emmett Benton's old diary. They discover that there are master tapes with Jacqui Benton (Jerrica & Kimber's mother) recordings. They relive painful moments from their past. Jacqui dying in a plane crash, Emmett losing his battle with a mystery illness, Jerrica's old fights with Rio. They finally discover Eric Raymond has the master tapes-he in turn throws them in the fireplace when Jerrica refuses to meet his demands.

3. Father's Day
Pizzazz and her father don't have a good relationship. Kimber is distraught when she is asked to write a song for a Father's Day celebration. She misses her father very much. In the end Kimber writes the song and Pizzaz's dad gets Jem & The Holograms to the big performance in time-much to Pizzaz's dismay.

4. Glitter & Gold

This whole Rio/Jem thing was baffling. Jerrica was his girlfriend, yet he cared for Jem. Everyone knew this. Didn't Jerrica get tired of being made a fool of? Obviously so. Jerrica has put her alter ego out of business. She is tired of deceiving Rio. She asks Synergy to make a simulation of Rio so she can tell him the truth. The fake Rio goes off about how he hates lies and deception. When Jerrica finally gets the courage to tell Rio the truth, they are interrupted by Kimber's dates arguing. Rio blows up at Kimber before Jerrica can tell him the truth and then he famously kicks over the plant, oh yes after his famous, "I hate lies and I hate deception" speech. Rio, get real, you are a bum, you are cheating on your girlfriend and you hate lies & deception?
5. Riot's Hope
Episode 64, oh the drama, please spare me. Riot wants to please his parents by showing them what a success he is. His father thinks he is a loser and smashes Riot's record. Riot's poor mother can't take the stress and is hospitalized. Riot's father punches him out at his record release party. Riot details his discharge from the military and how his father is disapointed in him. Of course, in the end they reconcile and the mother's health improves-with Jem's help of course.

Honorable Mention
A Father Should Be This was the last episode in the Jem series. Starlight Girl Banee wants her real father and Jem & The Holograms set out to find him. A Vegas con artist pretends to be Banee's father and kidnaps her at a zoo. The other Holograms have found Banee's real father who has lost his memory. The Vietnam vet (Banee's real dad), rushes to the zoo where he has flashbacks and remembers Banee's mother Kee-Oh-Ching, and he saves Banee. Now this man has not had his memory all of these years, and he still has flashbacks. You mean to tell me without counseling or any kind of transitional preparation, you are just going to hand over Banee to this man? Well that is what they did, and Riot and The Misfits??? all came to Banee's going away party.

Runner up's,episode 58, Homeland, Heartland-Danse is reunited with her long lost father, The Stingers Hit Town part 2 (This one gets mentioned because Rio goes to the harp and tells Jem that if it is Riot she wants he will leave and she will never see him again, Jem chases after him, hello Rio you are Jerrica's boyfriend), Oh yes, and who could forget The Talent Search part 2, Raya's family is poor running a flower nursery and Eric Raymond pays someone to destroy the nursery when Raya refuses to tell him Jem's secret. Aja falls in love with Craig Phillips-who just happens to be Mary, I mean Stormer's brother.

Top 3 Jem episodes that are more like an after school special
During season #2 particularly, the writers for Jem decided that the show should have a message. Jem was no longer only about spoiled rock stars and Jerrica's love triangle. At the end of the show there were often little PSA type "Do the right thing" segments. Several of the season #2 episodes had messages that you couldn't help but hear loud and clear.
1. Alone Again
That mean old Bobby gave new Starlight Girl Laura Holloway some pills that made her hallucinate. Before Laura knows it she is hooked on the pills and starts behaving erratically. Just in the nick of time, Jerrica takes this chick to rehab and Laura and Ashley team up to set up Bobby the drug dealer.
2. Roxy Rumbles
Roxy has won the lottery and decides to leave the Misfits and go back to her home town and throw a great big party. The problem is, Roxy can't read the bills. Just by chance, Jem happens to be in the same town throwing an event to promote literacy. By episodes end, Roxy is on the road to learning how to read.
3. The Middle of Nowhere
Save the whales, err, seals. Banee's pen pal doesn't want the seals to bite the dust. Eric Raymond wants to build a record factory in the cove where the seals live. By episodes end the seals have helped save several lives and Banee's pen pals brother decides that if the seals have to go, then no deal.

Jem was really Jerrica Benton. Jerrica also ran Starlight House, a home for foster girls. When her father died he left her 50% of Starlight Music and a special gift. Jerrica's father Emmitt Benton, created a machine named Synergy that could create Holograms. When Jerrica would say "Showtime Synergy" and touch her special pair of earrings, she could turn herself into Jem.

During the first two seasons, The Misfits, a rival rock group were Jem & The Holograms arch rivals. Every episode feature mini "videos" of the groups singing songs. The show also dealt with the schizophrenic love triangle of Jerrica/Rio & Jem. Rio was in love with both women, but he didn't know that Jem & Jerrica were actually the same person.

During the third and final season a third group was added to the show, "The Stingers". The lead singer, Riot immediately captivated women of both group, but he only had eyes for Jem, who only had eyes for Rio, or did Rio love Jerrica?

Sadly, Jem was canceled in 1987 before any of could find out how her love ended up.
